Sodoku is a number placement puzzle where the aim is to enter
a number from 1 through 9 in each cell of a grid, a 9×9
grid made up of 3×3 subgrids, starting with various
numbers given in some cells. Each row, column and subgrid
must only contain one instance of each number.
Completing the soduko puzzle requires only patience and logic.
Its classic grid layout is reminiscent of other newspaper
puzzles such as crosswords and chess. Soduko initially became
immensely popular in Japan in 1986 and in the UK in 2005.
